Fields Canada is inviting

Besides its general rounds, Express Entry holds category-based rounds for people with recent experience in certain fields, or with strong French. Here’s what each category asks for.

Express Entry categories

The current categories

For the occupation categories, you need at least 12 months of full-time work (or the same amount part-time) in one listed occupation within the last 3 years. For physicians, senior managers and researchers, that experience must be in Canada. You must also qualify for an Express Entry program.

Healthcare and social services

Recent experience in a listed health or social services occupation.

STEM

Recent experience in a listed science, technology, engineering or math occupation.

Trades

Recent experience in a listed skilled trade.

Education

Recent experience in a listed education occupation.

Transport

Recent experience in a listed transport occupation.

French-language proficiency

French test results of NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities.

Physicians

For physicians with work experience in Canada.

Senior managers

For senior managers with work experience in Canada.

Researchers

For researchers with work experience in Canada.

Skilled military recruits

For experienced foreign military members with a job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Being in a category doesn’t add points or guarantee an invitation, and IRCC can change the categories and their occupation lists. We check them against the official page and watch it for changes.

Fields people ask us about

Where your field may fit

Whether a category applies depends on your exact occupation. Global Compass checks yours for you.

Nursing

The healthcare and social services category may apply, if your occupation is on its list.

Computer science, AI and automation

Most computing jobs aren’t on the current STEM list (cybersecurity specialists are). General rounds, the Canadian Experience Class and provincial programs are the usual routes.

Biotech

No life-science occupations are on the current STEM list. Researchers with Canadian experience in listed research occupations have their own category.

Automotive

Some automotive jobs may fall under the trades or transport categories. Check the occupation lists.

Agriculture

There is no agriculture category right now. Provincial and community programs may fit instead; they aren’t part of our assessments yet, but a lawyer can look at them with you.
