Who we are
Global Compass (myglobalcompass.com, individual.myglobalcompass.com and corporate.myglobalcompass.com) is a service of Greenberg Hameed PC, an immigration law firm in Toronto, Ontario. Greenberg Hameed PC is responsible for the personal information collected through Global Compass and handles it under Canada’s private-sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
What we collect
- Your answers. When you use the questionnaire, we keep the answers you give. Depending on your goal, they can include your name, date of birth, citizenship, education, work history, language results, family, finances, immigration history and, where a program asks about it, your health or criminal history. You choose what to answer.
- Your account. Your name, email address and, if you add it, your phone number. Your password is stored only in scrambled (hashed) form. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name and email address with us.
- Employers. Your company’s details, your contact details, your assessment answers, and anything you add about your workers in the compliance tracker, such as their names, jobs, permit and passport dates, wages and notes. If you give us information about other people, please make sure you’re allowed to share it.
- Messages and consultations. What you send through a contact form (your name, email, phone, organization and message), and consultation requests, including your questions and your consent to share your file with the professional.
- Payments. You pay on PayPal’s own page, by PayPal account or card. PayPal tells us whether the payment went through, with its order number and the email address on the PayPal account. Your card number goes to PayPal, never to us.
- The weekly digest. If you subscribe, your email address, the wording you agreed to and when you confirmed your subscription.
- Technical details. Your internet (IP) address is used for a short time to stop abuse, such as too many sign-in attempts; with contact messages and digest sign-ups we keep only a scrambled (hashed) version of it. We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to save your answers. There are no advertising or analytics cookies and no tracking tools on Global Compass.
- Voice answers. If you answer a question by voice, your browser’s own speech service (for example Google’s or Apple’s) turns your speech into text and may process it outside Canada. Typing your answers avoids this.
How we use it
- To prepare your preliminary assessment. Assessments are built by a rules engine on rules our lawyers approve, and a lawyer reviews any with something unusual. They aren’t prepared by an AI service, and your answers aren’t sent to one.
- To run your account and save your progress, so you can continue on any device.
- To answer your messages and arrange the consultations you ask for.
- To take payments.
- To send the weekly digest, only if you subscribed and confirmed by email. Every digest has a link to unsubscribe.
- To keep Global Compass secure and prevent abuse.
- To meet our legal and professional obligations, including the records a law firm must keep.
We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising.
Who can see it
- Greenberg Hameed PC’s team: the lawyers who review assessments and the people who run Global Compass. Their access is limited to the people who need it, protected and recorded.
- A professional you consult: only with your consent.
- The services that run Global Compass for us: Supabase (our database and sign-in, hosted in Montreal); Amazon Web Services (our server and its backups in Montreal, and email delivery from Canada); PayPal (payments); and Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- Others, only when the law requires or allows it, for example to comply with a court order.
Some of these services, such as PayPal and Google, may handle information outside Canada, where the laws of that country apply to it.
Where it’s kept and how it’s protected
Your answers, your account and your assessment are stored on servers in Montreal, and so are our backups. Every page uses an encrypted connection, so what you type can’t be read on its way to us. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we’ll tell you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, as the law requires.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open, or for as long as we need it for the purposes above, including the records a law firm must keep. If you start the questionnaire without an account, your answers stay linked to your browser until you create an account or ask us to delete them. Backup copies are kept for 14 days. You can ask us to delete your information at any time, and we will unless the law requires us to keep it.
Your choices
- See and change your answers and account details at any time, once you’re signed in.
- Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or for it to be corrected or deleted.
- Withdraw your consent, for example by unsubscribing from the digest. Some parts of Global Compass may not work without the information they need.
- Complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you’re not satisfied with how we handle your information.
We answer requests within 30 days.
