Use this checklist for your chosen role, alongside any profession-specific guidance on this page. “Start before you leave” describes preparation you can begin abroad; it does not promise every application or examination can be completed there.
1
Choose the right application before buying an assessment
Start before you leaveUse your intended duties, not just your job title, to establish who accepts your qualifications in Northwest Territories.
- Use occupation code 11201 and the exact role you intend to do. A code can contain several professions with different requirements.
- The employment requirements on this page mention licensing or certification. Identify the application category for someone trained in your country and confirm whether it controls the work, a protected title, or both.
- Keep the recipient’s document checklist and application reference together. An educational assessment for immigration does not by itself grant a professional licence.
Choosing the recipient and preparing an application can begin before travel. Actual submission eligibility depends on the route.

2
Prepare the evidence while you can reach the people who hold it
Start before you leaveBuild a document inventory, then order only the records the receiving body requires in the format it accepts.
- Locate your award certificates, transcripts and course outlines. Ask your school how it supplies official records directly to an assessing body, including any language or translation requirements.
- Locate your existing registration, professional qualifications and licence history, if any. Obtain a current standing certificate only when the recipient asks for it and specifies the validity period.
- Record which documents you may upload and which must come from the issuing institution. Keep originals and arrange translations only under the recipient’s instructions.

3
Submit the application or evidence the recipient actually needs
Location depends on the application or assessmentFor regulated work, follow the applicable internationally educated applicant route. For other work, send the employer the qualification evidence it asks for; a separate assessment account or professional application may not be needed.
- If a professional application or assessment is required, confirm it accepts applicants from your current location and status before opening an account or paying.
- Use consistent identity details and supply the records the recipient requests. For records sent directly by an institution, provide the recipient’s reference and delivery instructions.
- Keep the submission confirmation, any fee receipt and a list of outstanding records. Follow the recipient’s follow-up instructions; submission does not mean recognition or a job offer.
Some bodies accept applications from abroad; others require a particular status, registration class or location. Where a profession guide is available, it identifies the distinctions supported by its sources.
Cost: Budget for the application, accepted assessment, translation, exams and any required training separately. Use the figures on the selected route or credential; no total is assumed.

Address the gaps the employer or assessing body identifies
Location depends on the application or assessmentIf the employer or assessing body identifies a gap, record the exact evidence, training or assessment it will accept and any deadline. Where the employer provides on-the-job training, arrange that training instead of assuming a professional examination is needed.
- Use the actual decision or job requirements to select training. Do not buy a course on the assumption that it guarantees recognition or employment.
- For each exam, establish the accepted format, approved test centre, booking window and validity of the result.
- For a placement or assessment held in Canada, arrange its admission and any required authorization before making travel or employment plans.
Only the gaps assigned to you apply. Remote delivery must be confirmed; an in-person assessment or placement may require Canada.

Before starting the Canadian role, check the final permission and conditions
In CanadaBring your qualification evidence and the final recognition or registration outcome to the employer.
- Where the work or title is regulated, check the issued registration class, restrictions and effective date. Completing an exam or assessment alone is not the licence.
- Keep the renewal date and any continuing-education or supervision conditions with your employment records. Professional recognition and immigration permission are separate.
At the point of starting work in Canada. This does not imply you must wait until arrival to apply for, or receive, registration.
