Chinedu: I'm Chinedu. I've been working in Toronto for three years. I have a good job, friends, and a life here. But my work permit expires in eight months, and I still haven't received an invitation for permanent residence. My Express Entry score isn't high enough. Should I change jobs? Improve my language scores? Look at another province? I'm running out of time, and I don't know what to do.
Narrator: Global Compass helps Chinedu understand where he stands. It can assess potential permanent residence pathways, identify relevant provincial programs, and explain what may be preventing him from qualifying. It can also help him explore improvement strategies and identify work permit considerations that may require professional advice. Instead of focusing on one immigration program, Chinedu can evaluate potential alternatives and plan his next steps.
Chinedu: I've worked hard to build my life in Canada. I want to understand every realistic option before my permit expires.

You’re aiming for: Permanent residence (become a permanent resident). We checked your answers against 28 requirements for your goal. Here’s what we found: 23 appear to be met, 3 may not be met, 1 needs more information and 1 needs a lawyer to look closer.
This is a starting point, not a decision. It’s based on what you told us, before anyone has looked at your documents, and only the Government of Canada can approve an application.
We use Government of Canada and provincial or territorial government pages for immigration requirements and published figures. We calculate your estimates from your answers. Our own guides and Marketplace listings are labelled separately. We never use lawyers’, consultants’, forum or news sites as sources.

From November 3, 2026, Canadian work and high-wage job offers count under a new factor. IRCC then recalculates every profile in the pool, which could take up to two weeks, and pauses invitation rounds until it’s done.

The pass mark is 67. Your estimate is at or above it. These points decide whether you can enter the pool under this program; they don’t rank you.
Your score is a starting point. Let’s look at the changes your answers let us calculate, what each would involve and which decisions are in your hands. Each example holds your other answers and the assessment date fixed. It is not a prediction of your score after time has passed.
On March 14, 2027 you turn 33, and your age points go from 94 to 88. Age is not something you can change. Keep this date in view when weighing a plan that takes time, alongside the expiry dates of your test results and documents.
This factor is an announced change. It applies from November 3, 2026, so it is part of the estimate from that day and not of today’s.
It gives 104 points, from your Canadian work experience (its length, with the high-wage addition where your occupation is on IRCC’s list). The factor counts whichever of the two gives more, never both added together.
The most it can give in your situation is 150 points.

We checked each requirement against your answers. Here’s what we found, with the government page beside it.
None of the jobs you told us about gives you 12 months of full-time work (or the same amount part-time) in the last 3 years in one occupation on IRCC's current lists for the healthcare and social services, STEM, trade, education, transport, physician, senior manager or researcher categories (for the physician, senior manager and researcher categories, the work must be in Canada), so those category rounds may not be open to you. General and program-specific rounds can still invite you if you qualify for them. If you worked 12 months in the last 3 years in a different occupation that is on these lists, those category rounds could still apply.

Your work or study permit ends within about 12 months, or your status may already have ended, so a lawyer will review how you can keep your status, and keep working if you are allowed to, until you become a permanent resident. If you hold a work permit, a bridging open work permit through Express Entry is only possible once you are invited to apply and, as the principal applicant, submit a complete permanent residence application that passes IRCC's completeness check; an Express Entry profile is not an application. A post-graduation work permit can be extended only if it was issued for a shorter time because your passport was expiring. In most cases, a study permit stops being valid 90 days after you complete your studies, even if a later date is printed on it. Don't work in Canada without status: it can make you ineligible for Express Entry.

Based on your answers, these are the documents the government requirements ask you to gather. We’ve grouped them by program so you can work through them.
You and all family members, including anyone not coming to Canada, need an immigration medical exam by an IRCC panel physician; Express Entry applicants get it after being invited and before applying. If you live in Canada and had an exam in the last 5 years showing low or no risk, you may be able to reuse it.
Official source: Medical examination for permanent residence applicants
You and family members aged 18 or older need police certificates for each country, other than Canada, where you lived six months or more in a row since age 18 in the last 10 years.
Work experience is read against what the occupation's description says, not against your job title: IRCC looks for the lead statement and a substantial number of the main duties, including every essential one. For Canadian work it asks for employer reference letters covering each period you claim, with your work permit and your T4 slips or Notice of Assessment, or other records that substantiate the work, such as a letter of employment, contracts and pay stubs. Time while you were a full-time student does not count. Check that each letter states your duties, your dates, your hours and your pay, and that the duties in it are the duties you actually performed.
Official source: Canadian experience class (CEC): Qualifying work experience
Every figure in your estimate rests on a document, and the document has to still be valid on the day you submit. If your score is recalculated below the lowest score in the round you were invited in, IRCC says to decline the invitation; applying anyway can mean a refusal and no refund of the application fee. An expired language result, a lower retest, a job offer that has ended or a nomination that has been withdrawn all lower a score. Check the date on each language result, each credential assessment and each bank letter against the date you expect to submit, and ask for a replacement early where one will be needed.

Unless you are exempt, your settlement funds must be your own and available, not borrowed or tied up in property, shown by letters from each bank listing balances, six-month averages and debts. You don't need proof of funds if you're invited under the Canadian Experience Class, or if you're authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer; IRCC's system still asks everyone for a proof of funds document, so in that case you upload a letter explaining why. Keep your funds up to date in your profile, since you may not know ahead of time which program you'll be invited under.

Your answers flagged these points to check in your records. We haven’t seen the documents yet; each item tells you what would settle it.
Let’s look at what your records need to show. We’re working from your answers and haven’t seen the documents. Each item explains what may follow if it stays unresolved, and what would settle it. None of it is a prediction about your application, and none of it is scored.
You gave the settlement funds available to you as 18000, for a family of 1.
Where a program requires settlement funds, the amount is established by the documents filed rather than by the figure given here, and the figure has to be met on the day it is assessed. Funds the records do not establish, or that are not available to be used, cannot support the requirement.
What settles it: Official letters from every bank or financial institution holding your money, on their letterhead, with their contact details, your name, your outstanding debts, and for each account its number, the date it was opened, the current balance and the average balance over the past 6 months, together with an account of any money that is not yours to use.
Here’s what the rules say, based on your answers.

Please confirm, for Bridging open work permit (BOWP): A75: In Canada, valid/maintained/restorable worker status, PR application at the required stage.
Go through this with a lawyer, for Keeping your status in Canada while you wait for permanent residence: Permit ends within about 12 months, or status may have ended: plan how to keep status until permanent residence.
If you want to explore Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program: Ontario Workforce Priority stream instead, start here: Ontario Workforce Priority stream: a full-time, permanent Ontario job offer (or self-employed physician).
Let’s take the open requirements one at a time: what your answers tell us, what you can work on, and what to check before spending time or money. Missing information comes first; it may need confirming rather than fixing.
We need your permanent residence acknowledgement of receipt (or approval in principle), the program you applied under, and confirmation you hold valid, maintained or restorable worker status in Canada.
Confirm this first
The answers behind this finding: What is your immigration status in Canada right now, if you have one: Worker; If you have a Canadian work permit right now, when does it expire: 2027-06-26; Have you applied to extend or change your status before your current document expired, and are you relying on maintained status now: Not applicable.

How to take this forwardBefore you commit. A location preference is a real life decision. Changing a selection in the form does not establish residence, a local connection or an intention you do not have.
You may not qualify for Ontario’s nominee program right now: since June 25, 2026 its only open stream, Ontario Workforce Priority, needs a full-time, permanent job offer from an Ontario employer (eligible self-employed physicians are the exception).
Depends on another decision
The answers behind this finding: Do you have a job offer in Canada: No; Do you have a valid nomination certificate from a Canadian province or territory: No.

How to take this forwardBefore you commit. An employer decides whether to offer work and support any required process. A job posting or a conversation with a recruiter is not a qualifying offer.
Doing any of these does not mean a path would open. Each one changes a single requirement; the others still apply, and a lawyer can tell you which are worth the effort in your case.
Put the key dates above in your calendar. Read back your answers and correct anything that isn’t right. Start gathering the documents on your checklist.
Fill in what we still need to know above, so we can check those requirements.
Go through the requirements that need a lawyer’s judgment together, then discuss your options and timing.
